Reminder!

Smaller nonprofits now required to file tax returns!

Smaller nonprofits are now required to file tax returns.  Until recently, small tax-exempt Nonprofit organizations with gross receipts less than $25,000 did not have to file annually with the IRS.  But that has changed.  The Pension Protection Act of2006 requires smaller nonprofit groups to file a Form 990-N to ensure that the IRS and potential donors have current information about every nonprofit organization.  Groups with a "parent" organization probably do not have to file. Form 990-Nis filed electronically, as an e-postcard: which involves answering fewer than 10questions online. Go to IRS.gov than use 'search' for, Form 990-N. There is no paper form.  The filing will be due every year by the 15th day ofthe fifth month after the close ofeach non-profit's tax year. In other words, if the tax year ends Dec. 31, the form is required by May 15th the next year.  Groups that don't file on time will get a reminder notice from the IRS.  No penalty will be assessed for late filing but a nonprofit organization that fails to file Forms 990, 990- EZ, or Form 990- N for three consecutive years will automatically lose its tax exempt status.
